125th Street Garbage Bags: Letter to the Commissioner
(Had to keep it 150 words or less!)

To Commissioner Doherty:

I live on 125th Street in Harlem. It’s covered in litter.

A major cause of the litter is that the garbage bags are put in the trashcans all wrong. They're hastily thrown in so that only half the bag is in the can, while the rest hangs uselessly over the edge. As a result, the bags fill up with trash in no time, and people start littering. Once there’s some litter on the street, people have no problem adding more. It's a cycle, and this is one of the causes.

Luckily, the city can fix it--with minimal additional effort and no additional monetary costs. If placed in properly, the bag should take up the entire can.

This historic street needs to be kept clean. We’re ready to toss our trash in the bins if the city lets us.

Respectfully yours,

Christopher W.
