125th Street Garbage Bags: Meaningful response!
I am writing in response to your e-mail September 17th to Commissioner John J. Doherty regarding litter conditions caused by the litter baskets along 125th Street.
On September 24th, Lieutenant N. of the Department’s Enforcement Division met with Barbara Askins President/CEO and Anthony Baker, Director of Operations for the 125th Street Business Improvement District. Lieutenant N. expressed your concern of the garbage bags causing litter conditions, as they were not properly placed in the cans. These baskets are placed on the sidewalks by the B.I.D. and unlike the D.S. baskets, they are bolted to the ground, which makes it difficult for the bags to be removed if they are placed fully inside the cans and bags are filled up with litter by passerby, as a remedy, these baskets placed out by the B.I.D. are being phased out and replaced with more practical litter baskets. In the meantime, the plastic bags will be removed more frequently, to allow more space inside the bags fro litter to be contained with spilling over onto the sidewalk.
Additionally, Enforcement personnel will continue to monitor for littering violations, and Notices of Violation will be issued if violations are observed.
